Elizabeth’s Group is a small but passionate group of local people that is working tirelessly to raise the profile of an unsung hero: Elizabeth Wolstenholme-Elmy.
Our aims are to ensure Elizabeth is known locally, nationally and internationally and that there is a lasting memorial raised to her in Congleton.
We undertake a wide range of awareness and fund raising activities and have fun whilst doing it – sometimes dressing as suffragists.
We have trustees, a working committee and a growing number of supporters. We are always happy to meet with new people who would like to help us with achieving our aims.
Elizabeth’s Group is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission. Charity Number: 1181256.

Dr. Maureen Wright
Dr. Wright, Patron of Elizabeth’s Group, is a historian and author of the first full-length biography of women’s emancipation activist Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy (1918-1933). Dr. Wright’s research was initially funded by an Arts and Humanities Doctoral Research Scholarship and she has since published widely on Wolstenholme Elmy’s life and public achievements.
Her book, Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy and the Victorian Feminist Movement: the biography of an Insurgent Woman was published by Manchester University Press in 2011, and is now available in both paperback and digital formats. Dr. Wright’s latest research will be published in 2020 in a women’s suffrage collection from Routledge (edited by Prof June Purvis and Prof June Hannam), where Wright considers Wolstenholme Elmy in the role of feminist ‘heroine’.
Dr. Wright currently works as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Chichester, West Sussex where she teaches on Women’s and Gender History in the Institute of Humanities. Communications can be addressed to her at: M.S.Wright@chi.ac.uk
Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy is truly an unsung hero and the women of this country do not know how much they owe to her. We hope to change that and one of the ways we plan to do this is by creating a lasting memorial erected to her – ideally a bronze statue.
The UK is heavily populated with statues but less than three per cent are of women, and most of those are of Queen Victoria.
There is a move to address this by erecting a heritage trail of female statues across the country and we want Elizabeth to feature in this in Congleton Town Centre.
We need to raise a large sum of money to achieve this. If you would like to contribute to Elizabeth’s statue fund please click the donation button below.

Women Like Us
‘Women Like Us’ is a Cheshire-based project to celebrate our amazing women. Whether it’s your mother, grandmother, boss, friend or just someone you admire, our goal is to create a giant mosaic that will celebrate them all.
The mosaic will make up the face of Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy, a prominent women’s rights campaigner who lived in Congleton. Elizabeth campaigned successfully for girls’ right to an education, women’s right to own property and for right of women to vote.
You can visit the Women Like Us site here.
